What Temperature to Keep Your Thermostat in Winter Weather

As the weather gets colder you may be wondering what is a good temperature to keep your thermostat at in the winter. We understand the importance of wanting to maintain a balance of comfortability while also maintaining energy efficiency. During freezing temperatures you may want to blast the heat to keep your home/space warm. This may not be the best idea for a few reasons which we’ll break down in this article.

The Recommended Temperature:

HVAC experts recommend that you should set your thermostat around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) while you are home during the colder months. Keeping the thermostat at this temperature will maintain the desired balance between energy efficiency and comfortability.

Reasons to Keep Your Thermostat at 68 Degrees Fahrenheit:

  1. Comfortability: 68 Degrees Farenheit seems to be the ideal temperature to stay comfortable indoors. It should not be too hot or too cold. As Goldilocks would say, this temperature is ‘just right.’

  1. Energy Efficiency: Keeping your thermostat at 68 degrees can help with reducing energy usage while also maintaining the efficiency of how well your home is heated. Keeping your thermostat at a lower temperature will prevent your HVAC heating system from having to work harder running longer to maintain warmth within your home.

  1. Cost Savings: During the winter months energy bills can be very expensive having the heat running constantly. Keeping your thermostat at a lower heat temperature can help with cost savings.

  1. Wear & Tear: It’s vital to maintain your HVAC heating system during winter months. Overusing your heating unit can put serious wear and tear on your system causing it to break down faster. The last thing you want is to have your system break down in the middle of winter not maintaining heat at all, which can be dangerous to your health. Keeping it at around 68 degrees can prevent your unit from having to work too hard breaking it down.

  1. Environmental Impact: According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) heat energy usage accounts for 43% of all the energy usage in the United States. As you can imagine that is a lot of energy usage to heat homes and buildings. To keep your heat at a lower temperature prevents you from overusing your HVAC heating system, which has the added benefit of reducing harmful environmental impact.
