Prepping your HVAC Heater for Fall Temperatures

With summer closing out and the fall season coming you may be concerned about how to prepare your HVAC heating system for cooler temperatures. In this article we’ll discuss how to get heaters that are not gas powered ready for fall.

1. Replace or Clean the Air Filters

Make sure to have your HVAC heating systems air filters changed out and cleaned. Keeping your air filters clean will maintain your HVAC heating system working efficiently.

  • Change filters out more frequently with kids, pets, and predisposed respiratory conditions like asthma

2. Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

Outdoor HVAC units should be cleared from any debris, toys, etc. Left over from the summer and stormy season.

  • Clear any debris like plants, bushes, or trees that are close to your unit should be trimmed and kept at least two feet. This allows your unit to have space for proper airflow.

3. Inspect the Vents and Ducts

Have your vents and ductwork inspected by a professional and registered HVAC technician. If there are any obstructions they can be removed, cleaned, and any repairs fixed.

  • Clean and remove debris like toys, clean around vents and registers. Keep clear to allow for proper airflow.

4. Test the Thermostat

Make sure to check your thermostat. A working thermostat is important to maintain warm temperatures. If anything is not working properly have a registered HVAC technician inspect, repair, and replace if needed.

  • When checking your thermostat, set it to the optimal temperature desired for cooler fall temperatures. Make sure the thermostat is responding properly. If your thermostat is out of date or unresponsive you may want to consider a potential upgrade. Newer thermostats have programmable settings to help save on energy costs. Discuss this with your HVAC technician to consider your options.

5. Check for Air Leaks

Drafts from windows and doors can make your HVAC systems work harder than necessary.

Make sure to check for any leaks in your home. Leaks can cause excess energy usage putting wear and tear on your system while increasing energy bills.

  • Check seals on doors, windows, ductwork, or other areas where air could escape. If you noticed higher energy bills in the summer this could be a sign of a leak. Speak to your registered HVAC technician to inspect your home for any leaks if you are unsure.

6. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Make sure to have all maintenance scheduled for the fall season. We recommend starting the necessary maintenance in late September and October.

  • If you wait too long to have maintenance done as it gets colder your HVAC heating system could fail in extreme cold weather. To avoid an emergency like this, have it done sooner rather than later.

7. Installations & Moving Unit

If you need a unit installed in your home, fall is the time to do it. You don’t want to wait till winter comes and temperatures get too cold. Waiting too long can be dangerous in extreme temperatures if heat is unavailable.

  • You want to talk to your registered HVAC professional about installing the best unit for your space. If you are moving and want to keep your current unit some HVAC companies like ours at Air-Mart AC & Heating will move your old unit to your new location.
