Common Summer HVAC Problems & Solutions Part I

With temperatures high this summer it’s vital for your HVAC system to work properly without any hiccups. This way you can live comfortably and have peace of mind that your air conditioning system won’t go out when you need it most. With increased usage of our A/C systems there is the concern for issues.

It’s important to know how to identify and address these problems with the help of your local registered HVAC technician. In this article we describe some common  problems you may encounter this summer with your A/C and some solutions that can help:

  1. Refrigerant Leaks

Problem: When your HVAC system is low on refrigerant, it could indicate a leak. This could result in poor cooling in your home/space with increased energy usage.

Solution: Your local registered HVAC technician can inspect and repair the leak. Having your systems regular maintenance checks done can prevent the problem from happening.

  1. Clogged Air Filters

Problem: Air filters become clogged with dirt, dust, debris, and other particles blocking

blocking airflow. This causes your HVAC system to work harder increasing energy usage.

Solution: Have your HVAC air filters changed and/or cleaned periodically. We recommend at least once every month. With pets, children, or preexisting health conditions you may have to want to change them sooner.

  1. Dirty Condenser Coils

Problem: Condenser coils often get dirty, because they are located on the outside of your HVAC unit, exposing them to the elements. When they get dirty they aren’t able to properly release heat they absorb from your home/space. This reduces their efficiency and causes your HVAC system to overheat.

Solution: To keep condensers clean you can regularly hose them down or use   a brush/towel to remove the dirt and debris. Have them regularly inspected by your local registered HVAC technician, they can clean them as well if needed.

  1. Thermostat Issues

Problem: If temperatures in your home/space are inconsistent it could be a sign of a malfunctioning thermostat, or it could have the incorrect settings on. Inaccurate readings on a thermostat could run the A/C longer overusing energy.

Solution: First check to see if your thermostat is at the right settings. If it isn't and the temperature regulates after some time then great! If it is at the right settings and the temperature is irregular contact your local registered HVAC technician. They can check to see if they can fix your thermostat or replace it if it still isn’t working.

  1. Blocked Drain Lines:

Problem: When drain lines are blocked they keep your HVAC system from removing any  condensation accumulated from the cooling process. These can become blocked with dirt, algae, debris, etc. Which can lead to excess moisture buildup causing water leaks.

Solution: Regularly inspect your drain lines to make sure they aren’t clogged. If they are clogged, have them cleaned out. Your local registered HVAC technician can install an overflow shut-off switch to prevent damage in the event there is a clog detected.

You may encounter some issues this summer with your HVAC air conditioning system. Which is why we encourage you to stay vigilant at addressing these concerns right away. Having regular servicing, maintenance, and inspections scheduled with your local HVAC rep can help prevent these issues from happening and keep your home/space cool.
